Today I am not going to talk exactly about us, at least, not directly. I want to talk about the way of life and honesty you still find in a big city like Calgary. I will talk about the C-train which is a mix of train and tram.
Hoje eu não vou falar exatamente sobre a gente, não diretamente, pelo menos. Quero falar sobre o jeito de se viver por aqui e sobre a honestidade que ainda se encontra em cidades grandes como Calgary. Vou falar um pouco sobre o C-train que é um VLT (Veículo Leve sobre Trilho) ou mais simplesmente, uma mistura de trem e bonde.
The C-train and the buses are the most important (or the only?) public transportation in Calgary and the C-train is the best alternative to go to downtown. It is fast and you don’t have to be bothered about parking. It is much cheaper then paying for parking too.
O C-train e os ônibus são os mais importantes (ou pode-se dizer, únicos) meios de transporte públicos de Calgary e a melhor alternativa para ir para o centro da cidade. Além de ser mais rápido, também evita pagar valores exorbitantes para estacionar no centro.
Last month I was attending a serie of workshops in downtown. To get there I was taking every day the C-train. Then I bought a month pass paying $ 85.00 for it. This is a good and a worthy option if you are going to use the C-train or the buses frequently – the tickets individually can cost $2.75. With that card you can use as much as you want, both the C-train or the buses during that current month.
No mês passado eu participei de um curso no centro da cidade. Para chegar lá eu usava o trem todos os dias. Para isso eu comprei um passe de $85.00, o que é muito vantajoso quando se precisa usar o trem ou ônibus (ou ambos) diariamente. A tarifa avulsa é de $2.75. Com o passe pode-se usar a vontade ambos os meios de transporte, tanto quanto se queira, durante o mês em vigor.
In the pictures bellow you can have an idea how some stations are. Now, here is the most important detail: there isn’t any turnstile to get in!!!! You just have to validate (if it would be the case) your ticket in a vendor machine AND.....you don’t have to show it to anyone if there isn’t a clerk at the station. And there never is one!
Abaixo tem umas fotinhos que dão uma idéia de como são algumas estações. E, o detalhe mais importante: não tem roleta ou catraca, ou qualquer forma de portão aonde se precise mostrar a passagem!!!! A pessoa precisa apenas validar o ticket em uma máquina que registra a estação e o horário de entrada (no caso das passagens individuais). Não tem ninguém nas estações conferido!

Well, as I let you know before, last month I took the C-train every week day, twice in a day. Only once the police got inside the train to check if everyone had the validated ticket. And believe me, there were a few (very few: I saw only two) who didn’t have the tickets. The fine to pay for that? $150.00. This is the fine for being caught without a valid fare!
Bem, como já disse, no mês passado eu peguei o trem todos os dias, duas vezes ao dia. Em apenas um dia a polícia entrou no trem para conferir as passagens. E acreditem, só vi duas pessoas tendo problemas com isso. A multa para essa pequena contraversão (ou esquecimento)? $150.00!
All this amazing honesty in a city with an area about 700 km2 and approximately 1 million people living in!!! This is wonderful! This is a good and fair reason to be happy about living in Calgary!
Todo esse senso de honestidade em uma cidade com área de 700 km2 a aproximadamente 1 milhão de habitantes!!!! Não é maravilhoso? Essa é uma boa razão (entre outras muitas, é claro) para ser feliz em viver em Calgary!
