Snow Day!

This morning I was so excited with the snow that took some pictures from our apartment just to show it quick to you. But, sure, I would like to post more and more AND MORE pictures!

Hoje de manhã cedo eu estava tão algariada com a neve que tirei umas fotos rapidinho só para poderem ver como estava. Mas, é claro, eu queria tirar MUITAS outrads fotos!

The first one is a photo of that tree I’ve already take lots of pictures. Now it is not white, but, at least everything else around is. And once again the view looks different.

A primeira foto que tirei é daquela mesma árvore que já tirei várias outras fotos. Agora ela não está coberta de neve (é claro - por que não tem como estar!), mas, pelo menos, tudo ao redor está branquinho, modificando novamente a paisagem.

Brieana, Alice’s friend, slept over last night here. When they woke up this morning I opened the window so they could see the snow. You should’ve seen their faces! They were very excited with it. Just like me.
A coleguinha da Alice, a Brieana, dormiu aqui em casa na noite passada por que elas não teriam escola hoje (reunião apenas para professores). Quando elas acordaram eu fui correndo no quarto e abri a janela para verem a neve. Tinham que ver a carinha delas! Ficaram tão felizes. Do mesmo jeito que eu.

The first thing Alice wanted to do was talk with titia in MSN. Titia wasn’t on line, but uncle Sérgio was. She could tell him about the snow and show it to him.
A Alice quis logo falar com a titia no MSN, mas ela não estava on line. Mas como o Sérgio estava falou com ele e até mostrou com a câmera a neve.

After breakfast we went outside to play in the snow and try to build a snowman. We didn’t build a snowman but we managed to play a lot. Here are some pictures and one movie.
Depois do café da manhã saí com as gurias para brincar na neve e fazer um boneco de neve. Não fizemos o boneco mas brincamos um monte. Abaixo tem umas fotos e um filmezinho.

Today was teachers in service day so kids did not go to school. Then, only Quico went to school today. But, because of the snow teachers were dismissed early. So Quico had lunch with us and could enjoy the snow day too.
Por causa da neve os professores foram dispensados mais cedo e o Quico pode almoçar conosco e se divertir também lá fora.

Barnabas came after lunch too. We went outside again and had a lot of fun. Below are more pictures.
O Barnabas também veio aqui em casa depois do almoço. Saímos novament para brincar e nos divertimos muito. Até guerrinha de neve fizemos!

Birthday Party

Finally Alice had her birthday party. We had decorated some cup cakes last week for that. Here they are.
Finalmente a Alice teve suas festinhas de aniversário. Na semana passada nós tínhamos decorado alguns bolinhos para levar para a escola.

But we had to freeze them and make others again. This time we found some smaller ones.
Mas, tivemos que congelá-los e fazer outros. Dessa vez, um pouco menores.

On Wednesday we celebrated her birthday in the school. However her birthday at school was a little boring. As I already told you, the schools here are really different from Brazilian schools. It is hard for them to do anything that could disrupt their routine schedules. We only sang happy birthday and even the birthday candle wasn’t allowed. Can you believe that?
Na quarta-feira comemoramos o aniversário dela na escola. No entanto estava meio sem graça. Como já disse outra vez, as escolas por aqui são bem diferentes das brasileiras. É muito difícil para eles fazerem qualquer coisa que seja fora da rotina diária. Apenas cantamos parabéns. Nem mesmo pudemos acender a velinha, acreditam?

On this Saturday we celebrated her birthday at home. We were concerned about who would come here – we only invited 2 of her classmates (Brieana and Ashlynn), Barnabas, another boy from her school (he is in the kindergarten too and he is from Hungary, his mom is also a VIF teacher) and one of Quico’s colleagues who has a 4 years old boy. For our luck, only Quico’s colleague didn’t come.
No sábado nós comemoramos o aniver da Alice aqui em casa. Estávamos preocupados sobre quem viria pois tínhamos convidado apenas duas colegas de aula (a Brieana e a Ashlyn), o Barnabas, colega da escola (estuda no kindergarten e é húngaro e sua mãe também é professora do VIF) e uma colega do Quico que tem um filho de 4 anos. Por sorte, apenas a colega do Quico não veio.

The children had a very funny time together. They jumped on the bed, they played games, they made some drawings, they had the face painted, they played hide and seek and made some tattoos.
As crianças se divertiram bastante. Pularam na cama, jogaram, desenharam, se maquiaram, brincaram de esconde-esconde e ainda fizeram tatuagem.

We also sang happy birthday in 3 languages: English, Portuguese and Hungarian. It was very interesting. You can hear the Hungarian version!
A Alice também teve direito à parabéns à você em três línguas: português, inglês e húngaro. Muito legal! Aqui vocês podem ouvir a versão húngara!

Last Weekend & Inauguration Day

This last four days were different for us. On Saturday we should have had a little birthday party to Alice in our apartment, but as you know, she was sick and we had to cancel it. So we stayed all day at home. On Sunday the same thing happened, we stayed at home most of the time.
Os últimos dias foram umpouco diferentes para nós. No sábado nós deveríamos ter feito uma festinha para a Alice aqui em casa, mas como sabem, ela esteve doente e tivemos que cancelar. Então acabamos ficando em casa o dia todo. O mesmo conteceu no domingo, ficamos em casa quase todo o dia.

On Monday was Martin Luther King Jr day. - Martin Luther King Jr was an important man who fought against the racial segregation and others kinds of discrimination, here in the USA and around the world. He received the Peace Noble price but was murdered very young. Since his death every third Monday of January the Americans celebrate his birthday. So, Tuesday was holiday for most of the government services including schools. Because of that Quico and Alice did not have school.
Na segunda-feira era feriado por aqui. Uma homenagem à Martin Luther King Jr. que lutou contra a segregação racial e outros tipos de discriminação, tanto aqui nos EUA quanto no resto do mundo. Recebeu o prêmio Nobel da paz mas foi assassinado ainda muito jovem. Desde a sua morte os americanos celebram o dia de seu nascimento, que acabou se tornado um feriado (terceira seunda-feira do mês de janeiro) para os órgãos públicos. Porisso o Quico e a Alice não tiveram escola.

A friend of Alice came to our house in the morning and stayed all the day with us. We took Alice and her to a Burger King with a large indoors playground where they played a lot. Later, she also went with Alice to the doctor. At night we invited a VIF teacher from Denmark and his family (wife and 3 sons) to have a dinner with us. It was a very pleasant night.
Uma colega da Alice passou o dia todo conosco nesse dia. Nós as levamos a um Burger King que tem um espaço grande para elas brincarem e ficamos por lá bastante tempo. Assim elas puderam gastar bastante energia em um lugar quente. Depois nós fomos ao médico da Alice e à noite recebemos, na nossa casa, uma família da Dinamarca. Abaixo tem uma foto da família: pai, professor do VIF, esposa e 3 filhos. Todos muito queridos e simpáticos. Estava ótimo!

Tuesday, as you know, was the big day: the Inauguration Day. We went to the Public Library near our home, where I have every Tuesdays mornings an English Conversation meeting, to watch the Inauguration Ceremony. Because the big screen wasn’t working we went back to home and watched the ceremony in our apartment.
Terça-feira, como sabem, foi um dia muito importante: Posse de Obama. Nós fomos assistir á posse a Biblioteca que fica próxima da nossa casa e onde eu tenho encontros semanais para praticar o inglês. Mas, infelizmente, o telão não estava funcionando e optamos por voltar para casa e assistir a cerimônia de casa.

Everybody was excited with the event and waiting for that with a big patriotic spirit, a characteristic from American people. The ceremony was nice and his speech was very interesting and emotional. I can understand why so many people were crying. Barack Obama’s inauguration means much more than a simple government change. It means a great victory for the African American people. And it also means that Americans are conscious about the changes they need to do in their way of living to continue being a prosperous nation they are.
Todos estavam excitados com o grande evento e esperando, com grande patriotismo - típico dos americanos - o grande momento. A cerimônia estava bonita e o discurso do presidente muito interessante e emocionante. Dá para entender por que tantas pessoas choravam. A posse de Barack Obama significa muito mais que uma simples troca de presidente. Representa uma vitória para todos os negros deste país. Também mostra que os americanos estão conscientes a respeito das mudanças que precisam fazer para continuar sendo a nação próspera que são.

Some winter pictures

Dou you remember the pond we can see from our apartment? Every day Alice and I pass beside it when we go to school.
Vocês lembram daquele laguinho que vemos do nosso apartamento? Todos os dias eu e a Alice passamos por ele no caminho para a escola.

The last days it has been especially beautiful. Almost the entire pond surface is frozen. We have been thrown some stones on it and watch them kicking over the surface. It has been nice!
Nos últimos dias ele tem estado especilamente bonito pois a sua superfície tem ficado congelada.
Sempre que passamos por ali nós atiramos uma pedrinhas e nos divertimos vendo elas quicarem sobre a superfíce do mesmo E NÂO afundarem!

Yesterday I took some pictures. There were some birds in there and some were swimming and others were standing over the ice. Very beautiful!
Ontem tirei umas fotos pois tinham uns pássaros por lá: patos, gansos e outros. Alguns nadando e outros em pé sobre o gelo. Lindo!

Here are some other winter pictures with the naked trees. You can compare the pictures of the same tree in the beginning and during the fall and now, during the winter.
Aqui têm outras fotos de uma imagem típica do inverno: árvores peladas. Podem observar a transformação na mesma árvore. Fotos do início, meio e final do outono, e durante o inverno.

It doesn't look the same place, isn't it? It is possible to understand how difference can a tree do in the aspect of a place.
Nem parece o mesmo lugar, né? Daí podemos ver a diferença que uma árvore faz na estética de um lugar.

I hope that soon I can take a picture of the same tree covered with snow!
Espero que possa -logo, logo -também tirar fotos da mesma árvor coberta de neve!

New Year Eve

We were invited to dinner in a Brazilian’s family house in the New Year’s Eve. The owners are the parents of a student from Quico’s school.
Fomos convidados pelos pais de uma aluna da escola do Quico para passarmos a noite da virada do ano na casa deles. Eles são brasileiros também.

They were very gentle in inviting us and we enjoyed it a lot.
A família foi muito gentil em nos convidar e nós ficamos muito felizes com o convite.
