Thanksgiving Day

O feriado de Thanksgiving é um, ou talvez, o mais importante feriado dos Estados Unidos. É um feriado nacional e comemorado por todos os norte-americanos, independente de idade, religião ou cor.
Thanksgiving is an important Holiday in the USA - maybe the most important of all. It is a national holiday and it is celebrated by all Americans, all ages, all religious and all colors. It is a national celebration.

O dia de Thanksgiving – como podemos inferir do próprio nome – é o dia de agradecer a todas as benesses da vida. É celebrado toda quarta quinta-feira do mês de novembro, mas, muitos extendem o feriado até o domingo mais próximo.
Thanksgiving is the day - like we can presume from its own name - to say thanks for everything or anything in our lives that we could be thankful about. Actually, the holiday happens on the forth November Thursday of the year, but most of the public services don’t work from Wednesday noon to Sunday.

Ninguém sabe ao certo quando aconteceu o primeiro Thanksgiving. Dizem que os primeiros imigrantes europeus (pilgrims) ao chegaram por aqui tiveram muita dificuldade com o lido da agricultura e com a diferença de clima e solo. O primeiro inverno foi muito rigoroso e, senão fosse a ajuda dos nativos (índios) que lhes ensinaram a lidar com os recursos naturais e a cultivar outras plantas, esses, provavelmente não teriam sobrevivido. Ao final desse primeiro ano os imigrantes convidaram os índios a comemorarem juntos, em grande banquete, essa vitória. Com o tempo isso se tornou uma tradição.
No one knows exactly when the first Thanksgiving happened. Anyway, it has been celebrated since the first Europeans came to this country. The most common story about this says that, on the first year pilgrims arrived here, they found lots of problems and difficulties, especially with the weather. The winter was very hard and they thought they would not survive. The native people (Indians) helped them and taught them how to use natural resources and how to cultivate some plants. At the end of this first year they celebrated with the Indians this achievement. Later becomes a tradition to celebrate it.

A beleza dessa celebração, a meu ver, é que mostra a todos os norte-americanos que eles são uma nação, independente das suas diferenças. Fazer uma pausa da correria das nossas vidas, pensar sobre tudo o que temos e agradecer a algo especial (ou não tão especial) é o que todos deveriam fazer.
The beautiful thing about Thanksgiving, in my opinion, is that it shows for all Americans they are one nation, even it they have different religion, origin or any other kind of difference. Having a brake from the rush of our lives, thinking about all we have and say thanks for something special (or not so special) is something that everyone and every nation should do.

Parabéns a todos os norte-americanos que celebram esse dia e a todas as pessoas do mundo que conseguem, em algum momento, fazer uma pausa para dizer obrigada, pelo menos, ao fato de estarem vivas!
Congratulations to all Americans who celebrate this day and to all the people in the world who can stop for a moment to say thanks for, at least, being alive!
