Field Trip: Confederation Park

Yesterday Alice’s class had a short walking field trip to the Confederation Park. The proposal was to collect some garbage around the park, make some sketches of the surroundings and also write what they were observing, hearing or feeling.

Ontem a turma da Alice foi passear no Confederation Park. A idéia do passeio era "catar" todo o tipo de lixo que encontrassem por lá, fazer um desenho so bre o que viam e ainda escrever sobre que observavam, escutavam ou sentiam.

As the room parent I went with them to help the teacher in case she needed. And I would sure not miss the opportunity to take some pictures of the group.

Como parent room eu fui junto para ajudar caso a professora precisasse. É claro que não perdi a oportunidade para fotografar os pimpolhos.
The weather was beautiful despite the low temperature (-2C) (chilly, as would Canadians say), but the kids had a nice time at the park.
O dia estava gelado (diria geladinho...para os padrões canadenses), mas as crianças aproveitaram.

Frozen pond. Rebember that? The other day it was crowed with ducks and geese. Hahaha...Now there is just a few of them. Only those who haven´t run away from the cold yet!

Puppet // Marioennette

Uns dias atrás a Alice me pediu para ajudá-la a fazer um fantoche para usar na aula de francês. Pegamos então uma meia velha, costuramos uns botões para os olhos, uma fita para a língua , colorimos a boca, etc...

A few days ago Alice asked me to help her to make a puppet (marionnette in French) for her French class. So we picked up an old sock, sewed some buttons as eyes, a ribbon as tong, colored the mouth, etc…

Aqui está a nossa obra de arte!

Enquanto fazíamos o boneco a Alice não aguentou e disse: "Mãe, tu tá fazendo bem direitinho, mas a dinda ia fazer melhor e mais rápido, né ?"
During the process, Alice said: “Mom, you are doing a good job, but Dinda (her godmother) would have done it better and faster, wouldn’t she?”

E nem pude ficar com ciúmes por que sei que a dinda teria feito MUITO melhor que eu! Tomara que logo logo ela possa vir aqui nos visitar. Quem sabe, daí eu aprenda a fazer melhor! hahahaha....
Ok, I couldn’t be jealous about it…..I know that her Dinda does it much better than me. We hope she can come here to visit us soon!

Surfing…..in Alberta????

Alguém pode me explicar o que esse carro - com uma prancha de surf em cima - está fazendo em Calgary?

Será que o dono está planejando pegar onda nos lagos das Montanhas Rochosas? Ou será que está pensando em surfar no Bow River? O que afinal de contas o cara (ou a cara) tem em mente?

Please, could someone explain to me what this car is doing here in Calgary? Is the owner planning surf on the mountain lakes? Or, maybe he is planning to surf on the Bow River? What the hell is he thinking about?

Bem, na primeira vez que vi esse carro por aqui foi um dia que estávamos passeando de bici. Mais tarde pensei: "Devia ter fotografado, pois além de estranho, o carro é bonito!" Mas deixei passar....

Well, the first time I saw this car was one day we were biking around….Later I thought: “I should had taken a picture of it!” But I didn’t…

Uns dia depois passei novamente pelo carro e, desta vez, não perdi a foto.

Some days later I was passing by when I saw the car again and I couldn’t miss the opportunity to take some pictures. It is a little weird…but, it is still a nice and beautiful car!

Walking with Night

Quem disse que gatos não usam guias para passear? Bem, a Night usa e adora! É claro, não a guia propriamente dita, mas as voltinhas que a Alice dá com ela.
Who says cats don’t use leashes? Well, Night does and loves it! Not the leash, that’s true, but the outside stroll with Alice.

Uma das restrições da Meow Foundation para a adoção dos gatos é a de que o bichinho fique sempre dentro de casa e só possa sair se preso em uma guia. Como nós tínhamos observado que a Night estava muito curiosa com a rua e decidimos então, comprar uma guia para poder passear com ela. E ela adora!!!!

One of the Meow Foundation adoption restrictions is to make sure the cat you are adopting will stay all the time inside the house, going outside only when using a leash. However we’ve been observing that Night was very curious about outside life and than we decided to try to take her for a stroll using leash! And…she loved it!

Quase todos os dias, logo que a Alice chega da escola, ela leva a Night para passear no pátio de casa. Mas, não pensem que a gatinha espera pacientemente pelo passeio....De jeito nenhum! Por volta das 3 horas (A Alice chega da escola pelas 3:40) ela começa a miar alto e a puxar a guia dela que fica pendurada na porta de entrada. Às vezes ela incomoda tanto que não consigo fazer mais nada a não ser ter que ceder e dar uma voltinha com ela....hahahaha....gata mimada essa!
Almost everyday when Alice comes back from school she goes in our yard to a short stroll with Night. And don’t think Night waits patiently for that…..No way! When it’s getting around 3 o’clock she starts to meow loud at the front door and also pulls her leashes from the hanger. Sometimes she gets so mad about it that I can’t do anything until I go out with her…. What a spoiled kitten!!!!!!

Outro dia recebi essa linda moeda como troco. Vejam!
Other day I got a pretty coin as exchange. Just have a look on that!

Esta é uma moeda de 25 centavos. Normalmente as moedas de 25 têm um animal de um lado, mas essa tem o símbolo do câncer de mama, e em cores!

This is a quarter coin . Usually quarters have in one of their sides a picture of an animal, but this one have the breast cancer symbol, and in colors!

....a Rainha Elisabeth II. Rainha da Inglaterra? Sim, mas não apenas. O Canadá faz parte do Commonwealth, o que significa que junto a mais 53 outros países tem a Rainha como chefe de estado! Alguns dos outros países pertencentes ao Commonwealth são a Nova Zelândia, a Austrália, a África do Sul e a Índia.

…Queen Elisabeth II. Queen of England? Yes, but not only from England. Canada is part of the Commonwealth which means that the Head of State is Queen Elisabeth II. The Commonwealth includes fifty-three other countries and some of them are: the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and India.

Happy TEACHER DAY!

For all of us who do our best to make and keep this work each day better!

Here in Canada teachers day is celebrated in October 5th. which is called World Teacher's Day.
Alice and I made some muffins to give to her teachers on that day.

 

On the October 3rd, Sunday Calgary Herald Newspaper issued an special section about the date. The teachers Association message in there was:

Thanks....Thanksgiving!

Aqui no Canadá se comemora o Thanksgiving quase um mês antes do que se comemora nos Estados Unidos. Isso por que o verão termina antes por aqui. Também a data é para comemorar a boa colheita do ano que passou e se preparar para o inverno que se aproxima.

The Thanksgiving is celebrated here in Canada almost one month before it is in the US. It happens because the winter here comes earlier then over there. Thanksgiving here, the same as happens in the US, is time to say thanks for the good harvest of the year and to be prepared for the new season that is coming soon.

Ontem nós comemoramos o Thanksgiving com uns amigos brasileiros. Estava ótimo! Boa comida, bebida e ótimo papo. E para as crianças....um bom dia de brincadeiras!

Nós, morando aqui já há três meses, queremos agradecer a oportunidade de poder viver em um lugar tão maravilhoso como este.

We celebrated the Thanksgiving yesterday with some Brazilian friends. It was great! Good food, good drinks, good chatting and for the kids…a good playing time!

We are living here for 3 months and want to say thank you for the opportunity of being living in such wonderful place.

Horseshoe and Horsethief Canyons

Sábado retrasado decidimos fazer um pequeno passeio pelas redondezas e aproveitar o lindo dia.

Saturday before last we decided to have a quick trip to somewhere outdoors and near Calgary. The weather was great and we had already set up a dinner for the evening.

O Quico pesquisou na internet e encontrou esses canions perto de Calgary: Horseshoe e Horsethief, que ficam nas proximidades de uma cidade chamada Drumheller, há 110 km de Calgary. Esta região é rica de fósseis sendo que muitos dos fósseis da era dos dinossauros foram encontrados ali. Dentre estes está o Albertosaurus sarcophagus que foi um grande carnívoro de porte comparado ao do T. Rex.

Quico searched in the web and found two Canyons: Horseshoe  and Horsethief in Drumheller town located 110 Km northeast of Calgary. In this area were found the most significant fossils from the Age of Reptiles. It is also very rich in fossils with more than 35 species of dinosaurs, including the Albertosaurus sarcophagus, and dating back more than 70 million years.

O primeiro canion que visitamos foi o Horseshoe (que tem esse nome por causa do formato que se assemelha a uma ferradura). O canion não é tão grande e por isso é fácil caminhar "dentro" dele. O terreno é incrivelmente bonito com suas várias camadas e "desenhos" formados pela erosão das águas e vento.
The first one we visited was the Horseshoe Canyon (the name comes from its horseshoe shape). The Canyon is not that big and we can walk in there. The terrain is incredibly beautiful with many shapes and layers from the extensively erosion by wind and water.

O segundo canion que visitamos foi o Horsethief. Este canion é tão grande que a cidade de Drumheller fica "dentro" dele. Dizem que o canion tem esse nome (Ladrão de Cavalos) por que antigamente os ladrões de cavalos levavam os cavalos roubados para o canion para depois revendê-los com outro nome.

The second one we had a look was the Horsethief Canyon.  This one is very huge and the city of Drumheller is located inside the canyon. People say that the Canyon got this name because it was used by horse thieves, in the settler years, to hide stolen horses and then, later sell them with a different brand.

Prince's Island Park - again

Sexta-feira retrasada: tempo maravilhoso. Ensolarado, seco e....com todas as cores do outono!
Desde que havíamos nos mudado para a casa não tínhamos ainda passeado pelo Prince's Island Park apesar do parque ser tão bonito. Então, na sexta-feira decidimos passear por lá. Colocamos as nossas bicis no carro, estacionamos por perto do parque e, de bici, fomos passear por lá.
Friday before last: wonderful weather. Sunny, warm, dry and .... with colours of fall!
Since we moved to the house we hadn´t been to the Prince's Island Park again and the park is so beautiful!
So this Friday we decided go back there. We put the bikes in the van and drove to the park.

We parked close to the park and then biked to there.

This is the beautiful Calgary!

 As you can see, the bridges are pretty....
