2010 in review....

Yes, 2010 was a year full of achievement and happiness for us! We are happy to end this year having had the opportunity to realize our dream: live in Canada. Sim, 2010 foi um ano cheio de realizações e felicidade para a gente! Estamos felizes por poder estar tendo a oportunidade de realizar um sonho: viver no Canadá. For the next year our goal is to keep this dream being true which means work hard and to face up the obstacles that maybe will come with wisdom and serenity.  Para o próximo ano nossa meta é manter o nosso sonho real. Isso significa trabalhar muito e enfrentar os obstáculos que surgirão com sabedoria e tranquilidade.

My first job, my first payment

You know that I am working as math tutor for a Tutor Center in the NW area of Calgary since last November. The work is pretty simple and basically the same as it is in Brazil: the center contacts me by e-mail and asks me if I am interested to tutor a student X who lives at Y and needs help in math Z (this means the level). If I am interested, I call the student’s parents, book the date and the time to the sessions and go to their house for tutoring. Usually the parents pay in advance to the center.

Vocês sabem que estou trabalhando, desde novembro, para um centro de aulas particulares daqui na zona noroeste de Calgary. O trabalho em si é muito parecido com o que se faz no Brazil. O centro me contacta por e-mail com as informações a respeito do aluno (zona, nível e número de horas) e pergunta se estou interessada. Se sim, eu contato os pais e marco as nossas aulas. Normalmente os pais pagam adiantado um certo número de aulas, para o centro. Depois disso eu vou na casa do aluno para dar aula.

The two mainly differences from Brazil  are: how the interview happened and how the payment is done.

O que têm (ou teve) de diferente nisso é como foi feita a entrevista e a forma de pagamento.

My interview for this position was set up by e-mail and happened in a food court in a Shopping Center! For me, it was weird and would be a big surprise if I hadn’t observed it happening with some other people, many times before, at Starbucks, libraries and other public places here in Canada and in the US.

Minha entrevista aconteceu na praça de alimentação de um shopping center! Para mim isso é meio estranho e seria uma surpresa se eu já não tivesse observado isso acontecer com outras pessoas. Nós já tínhamos observado isso nos EUA e aqui no Canadá também. Algumas pessoas sendo entrevistadas em Starbucks, bibliotecas e outros lugares públicos. Estranho, né?

The other difference is in the payment. I just have to send to the center some papers filled out with the information regarding the students lessons as dates and hours tutored and they mail me back a check as payment! I think it is awesome! You can send and receive a check by mail!

Outra diferença é na forma que o pagamento é feito. Eu preciso mandar uma papelada com informações sobre as aulas dadas por e-mail e daí espero o cheque de pagamento chegar pelo correio! Eu acho isso o máximo: pagar contas mandando cheques pelo correio, assim como receber um cheque pelo correio.

For my first payment I got also a Merry Christmas wishes and a Tim Horton's card.

No meu primeiro pagamento recebi com o cheque também um cartão com crédito para tomar uns cafés no Tim Hortons. Adorei, nem preciso dizer, né?

Quico works for a tutoring center too (when he is not working at Chapters), but the scheme is different: he goes to center and tutor the students over there. Sometimes he has to work with more than one student at the same time, but on the other hand he doesn’t have to go to each student's house and has his hours previously set up.

O Quico trabalha também (quando não está trabalhando na Chapters) para um centro de aulas particulares, mas o esquema do centro para o qual ele trabalha é diferente: ele dá as aulas no próprio centro. Na maioria das vezes ele precisa dar aula para mais de um aluno ao mesmo tempo, mas por outro lado, não precisa ficar se deslocando da casa de um aluno para outro e também tem o horário fixo, o que ajuda para se organizar tanto financeiramente quanto em relação ao tempo.

Our first Christmas in Canada

Was great and delicious!

Nosso primeiro Natal aqui no Canadá estava ótimo!

In the evening we skyped  to our families in Brazil and could have a “dinner” togheter. It was extremely hot in Porto Alegre: 40C!

I thought I would cry, but I didn’t. Everybody was so relaxed and we are so happy here that I didn’t have time for this. So, no space for big emotions.

À tardinha nós falamos com o pessoal no Brasil e até “jantamos” um pouco com eles. Em Porto Alegre estava MUITO quente: 40 graus!

Pensei que fosse me emocionar e chorar, mas não deu. O clima estava super tranqüilo e nós, aqui, estávamos super felizes também. Então, sem espaço para grandes emoções!

Later in the evening Bia picked us up at our house to join them for Christmas dinner. Yes, this time we indulged both us drinking time. We took a cab back home!

À noite a Bia passou aqui para nos pegar por que para o Natal decidimos nos dar de presente poder ambos beber. Sim, voltamos de táxi.

And the dinner was great! We had turkey, ham, Greek rice, “farofa”, potato sticks and salad. For dessert we had grape, strawberries with cream, apple pie and ice cream! Yummy!!!!

Everything was delicious and we had an excellent time together.
O jantar na casa dos tri estava ótimo! Tivemos para o jantar peru, arroz à grega, farofa, batata palha e salada. Nós adoçamos a noite com uvas, morangos com creme, torta de maçã e sorvete.
Estava tudo delicioso e tivemos uma noite de natal maravilhosa!

Alice and the triplets had fun too. They even played outdoors.

A Alice e os tri se divertiram muito e até brincaram na rua.

In the morning of the 25th we opened the presents that Saint Nick brought during the night. She left some cookies – that she had made herself – and milk to Santa. (Maybe that’s why Santa is fat. He needs to eat cookie and drink milk in every single home!) She was very excited about it. Her grandpa asked Santa to give a keyboard to Alice which was a big surprise for her! This was her favorite gift!

Na manhã do dia 25 nós abrimos os presentes que o Papai Noel deixou por aqui à noite. Sim, a Alice deixou bolachinhas – que ela mesma fez – e leite para o Papai Noel não esquecer de trazer os presentes. Pela manhã a sala estava cheia de presentes. A Alice abriu e, o que mais gostou foi a grande surpresa do Natal: o teclado que o vovô encomendou para ela!

In the afternoon we went to our Russians friends (Denis and Marina) house. They live in the 30th floor in a downtown appartment. This is part of the view from their apt. The Rocky Mouintains are visible.

Na tarde do dia 25 nós fomos na casa de um casal de amigos russos, o Denis e a Marina. Eles moram no 30-ésimo andar em um apartamento no centro de Calgary. Abaixo um foto de parte da vista do apê deles. No fundo, as Montanhas Rochosas.

We had a Russian dinner, had some bear (no vodka!) and good chat!
Nós jantamos à la russa (salada com camarão) e batatas com molho de queijo e costela de porco, cerveja (sem vodca!) e um bom papo!

Christmas Surprise!

Krista and Steve gave us a beautiful surprise for Christmas: a Christmas tree and LOTS, LOTS and LOTS of Christmas decoration to embellish our home. Alice loved every single thing! She was really excited about the tree and the decorations. Now, we definitely, got into the Christmas spirit!

A Krista e o Steve nos fizeram uma surpresa esta semana: apareceream aqui em casa com uma árvore de Natal e um monte, mas um monte mesmo, de enfeites para a árvore e para a casa. A Alice curtiu muito tudo isso. Agora entramos em definitivo no espírito natalino!

And, as if it wasn’t enough, they gave us a slow cooker! Since Octavio and Bia had told us the marvels you can cook with a slow cooker we were planning to buy one.  But you know, we have many other priorities and so we were delaying it….

E, como se não bastasse, eles ainda nos deram uma panela elétrica (slow cooker)! Já tínhamos planejado comprar uma por que a Bia e o Octavio tinham feito muita propaganda da slow cooker, mas sabem, né, ttemos sempre outras prioridades financeiras e estávamos sempre deixando para depois....

We hope we can soon make a delicious “feijoada” (Brazilian bean soup?) in the slow cooker for Krista and Steve!
Tomara que logo possamos convidar a Krista e o Steve para comer uma deliciosa feijoada feita na panela nova!

Winter Celebration

Last week there were some festive events at Alice’s school. Every day between 8:45 and 9:15 the students, parents and school staff were gathering in the gym to the Festive Singing to sing and play some fun seasonal songs. Alice and I enjoyed this event a lot.

Esta última semana, na escola da Alice, foi de comemorações de final de ano. Todos os dias entre 8:45 e 9:15 teve o "festival de música" em que todos (pais, professores e alunos), a medida que chegavam na escola, se juntavam e cantavam (ou tocavam) músicas natalinas no ginásio. Eu e a Alice adoramos o evento.

On Wednesday, December 15, we joined the Winter Concert in the school. The students had prepared some presentations to families. Alice’s class sang two songs: the first one was in French and is called Clic, Clac, dans les mains. They performed it using spoons to play, clapping and foot tapping which is a French Canadian tradition. It was amazing! They researsed it with their French teacher and a music teacher (volunteer mom) rehearsed the class.

Na quarta-feira (penúltimo dia de aula antes do recesso de inverno) nós assistimos o Concerto de Inverno que aconteceu na escola. Os alunos prepararam alguma músicas para apresentar. A primeira música que a turma da Alice cantou foi em francês e se chama Clac, dans les mains. Eles usaram colheres, mãos (para bater palmas) e pés na apresentação. O uso de colheres nas músicas é uma tradição franco-canadense. Eles ensaiaram com a prof de francês e com um professora de música que é uma mãe de aluno da escola e voluntária também.

The second song was My Marvelous Toy which is a famous Christmas song.

Here there are the beautiful cards Alice made for Night and us in the school. The card she made for NIght touched me. Aren't they prety?

Aqui estão os cartões que a Alice fez na escola. Adorei e fiquei emocionada com o cartão que ela fez para a Night. Lindos, né?

Those festive celebrations got us more in the Christmas Spirit!

Field trip: Cantos Museum

On Thursday Alice's classroom went to a field trip to Cantos Museum and I, as a room parent, went too.

The museum is in downtown and, as you can figure out from the name (at least, in Portuguese you can – cantos means sing!), it is about music.

Na quinta-feira passada a turma da Alice foi passear no Cantos Museum e eu, também! O museu fica no centro da cidade e, como se pode imaginar pelo nome, trata de música.

The Good Vibrations Program began with an introduction to the piano as a struck instrument where sound vibrates along strings of different lengths. It was amazing because the inside part of the grand piano was open and then the children could see what was going on while the educator was playing. All the time the educator was inquiring the kids about lots of things. I was surprised about their answers!

O programa Good Vibrations começou mostrando de que forma é produzido o som no piano. O educador do museu tocou em um grand piano - que estava abrto - e mostrava e questionava as crianças a respeito das diferentes vibrações e sons produzidos. Eu fiquei surpresa com as respostas e teorias das crianças!

At this part of the program the kids were asked to scream (in coordinate) close to the piano’s strings with the purpose to produce sound without typing any key. Kids screamed VERY LOUD (I don't have to let you know that...) and made the strings vibrate making a nice sound. It was cool!
Nesta parte do passeio o educador pediu para que as criançãs gritassem, todas ao mesmo tempo, e sob coordenação dele, perto das cordas do piano. As crianças gritaram MUITO alto (nem preciso dizer, né?) e fizeram as cordas vibrar produzindo um som legal!

After that, we went to the Discovery Room where they saw sound waves on the oscilloscope and explored ideas of pitch and volume in hands-on activities. They recognized  that sound is the result of a vibration and that the larger the vibration, the louder the sound. They played in a Grand Piano, in a Theremin (a weird instrument, which they loved) and in a “Blow out piano” (an opened grand piano where they played directly to the strings).

Depois fomos para a sala Discovery onde puderam ver as ondas de som em um osciloscópio e explorar idéias de intensidade e volume em atividades interativas. As crianças foram levadas a reconhecer o som como o resultado de vibrações e sua relação com o volume do mesmo. Ele puderam tocar em um grand piano, em um teramim (instrumento estranho e que eles adoraram) e em um piano "explodido" (piano em pé e aberto em que podiam "bater" nas cordas com um bastão).

Later, we went to a Producing Sound Gallery where kids explored struck, plucked, air and electric instruments by playing some different instruments.
Depois fomos para outra sala em que as crianças exploraram diferentes tipos de instrumentos e os classificaram quanto a forma que o som é produzido.

At the end, the educator played a VERY LARGE organ used in the old theaters during the silent era movies! This was REALLY COOL!!!!
Para finalizar o educador apresentou e tocou um órgão IMENSO que era usado antigamente em cinemas para fazer a música (ao vivo, pelo que entendi) dos filmes mudos. Foi MUITO TRI!!!!!
