The National Christmas Tree

Sábado à tardinha nós fomos até Washington DC para dar uma olhada na Árvore Nacional de Natal que fica próxima à Casa Branca, no parque presidencial conhecido como Elipse. Todos os anos, no início de dezembro, desde 1923, o presidente dos EUA e a primeira dama, tradicionalmente, acendem as luzes dessa árvore.
This Saturday evening we went to Washington DC only to have a look at the National Christmas Tree in the President Park (known as the Ellipse) near the White House. Every year in the beginning of December, since 1923, the US President and the First Lady light the tree.

Esse pinheiro, de aproximadamente 12 metros de altura, foi transportado para esse local em 1978 e ao redor dele foram plantados mais 56 outros pinheiros menores que representam os 50 estados americanos, o distrito de Columbia e ainda os 5 territórios pertencentes aos EUA.
This 40-foot (12 m) tree was transported to that place in 1978 and around it 56 smaller trees were planted, each one of them represents one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the 5 US Territories.

New York: third Day

No nosso último dia em Nova Iorque, nós, finalmente conseguimos entrar na tal famosa loja de brinquedos: a Schawarz. A loja é realmente muito bonita e tem brinquedos para todas as idades – até para nós! É muito difícil sair de lá de dentro de mãos vazias.
On our last Day in NYC we finally got inside the Schawarz - the kid’s store. This store is very beautiful and has toys for all ages – even for us! It is really hard to leave the store without something in the bag.

No setor de Barbies tem um computador com um programa em que as crianças podem vestir uma Barbie, e no final, é claro, comprar uma igualzinha! Também tem vários brinquedos para brincarem e personalizarem.
In the Barbie’s section there is a computer with a program where you can dress up a Barbie and - of course - buy the doll with exactly that outfit! There are some toys that you can play with or try it or customize them.

A Alice podia escolher algo para ela. Escolheu uma pulseira que podia ser montada na hora, do jeito que quisesse.
Alice could choose one thing for her and she chose a bracelet that she made exactly how she wanted.

À tarde fomos ao Museu de História Natura e Planetário. Para chegar até lá precisamos, mais uma vez, atravessar o Centra Park. E vejam só o que encontramos por lá:
In the afternoon we went to the Natural History and Planetarium Museums and to get there we had to cross the Central Park once again. Just look what we saw there:

And a Castle Belvedere where is possible to have a beautiful and panoramic view of Central Park and New York City.

Dentro do planetário assistimos a um espetáculo chamado Cosmic Collisions. É uma projeção 3-D que simula uma viagem através do espaço e tempo mostrando colisões cósmicas, impactos hipersônicos e a evolução do Universo. Estava maravilhoso! – Mas, desculpe-nos não era permitido fotografar ou filmar....
Inside the Planetarium we watched a Space Show: Cosmic Collisions. It was a 3-D immersive experience like a trip through space and time that simulates cosmic collisions, hypersonic impacts and the evolution of the Universe. It was really wonderful! Sorry but it was banned to take pictures of that …

Voltando para casa! Going back to home!

Papai Noel já passou por aqui!

Santa has already been here! Earlier this week Alice wrote a letter to Santa and also left on our fire place some cookies and a cup of milk for him.
No início da semana a Alice deixou sob lareira algumas bolachinhas, uma xícara de leite e uma cartinha para o Papai Noel.

Como podem ver ele já passou por aqui e deixou alguns presentinhos. Alguns deles ele deixou e m Porto Alegre, na casa da titia (ela só mandou pelo correio para nós!). Um dos presentes – a almofada vermelha – foi um presente da minha amiga e professora, a Dale. Ela mesma fez e eu adorei!
As you can see he’s already been here and left some gifts. Some of them came from Porto Alegre (Santa left them at aunty’s house and she only sent by mail to us). One of them – the red pillow – was a gift for me from my friend and teacher Dale. She made it herself. It is very beautiful!

Santa Claus kindly left a reply letter to Alice. She was pleased with it.
O Papai Noel, muito educadamente, respondeu a cartinha da Alice e ela vibrou muito com isso.

New York: Second Day

No segundo dia em NY City nós visitamos o Museu da Criança em Staten Island (um dos Burroughts de Nova Iorque) e, para chegar lá, pegamos a balsa (Ferry Boat).
On our second Day in NYC we visited the Children’s Museum in Staten Island (one of NYC Burroughs) and we had to take the Ferry Boat to get there.

Esse museu fica em um parque chamado Snug Harbor Cultural Center de aproximadamente 340 km2 de área. Seus prédios foram construídos inicialmente, no século XIX para abrigar marinheiros aposentados e tem sido restaurado há 28 anos. Hoje todo esse espaço se transformou em um centro regional de artes, com museus, teatros, jardins e festivais.
The Children’s Museum is located on the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center. It is a park-like area (83acre or 340 km2) which used to be the home for retired seamen in the 19th century and that has been restored for 28 years. Nowadays it is a regional arts center with gardens, museums, theaters and seasonal festivals.

Uma das atrações desse Centro é o Museu da Criança que possui vários brinquedos interativos interessantes para as crianças e para os pais!
One of the Center attractions is the Children’s Museum with lots of interesting hands-on activities for children and (why not?) for parents.

Tivemos uma manhã agradável. O tempo estava bom , o lugar é super bonito e pudemos brincar bastante com a Alice.
We had a nice time there. The weather was great, the place is very beautiful and we could play a lot with Alice.

À tarde nós fomos – uma vez mais – na loja Schwarz. Mas a fila estava enorme e nós não quisemos perder tempo em fila para entrar em uma loja! A Alice ficou triste e chorou bastante. Então prometi para ela que iríamos tentar mais uma vez no dia seguinte. O Quico poderia passear enquanto esperássemos na fila. Então aproveitamos o resto do dia para passear mais um pouco no Central Park e visitar Greenwich. (bairro boêmio de Nova Iorque) onde e pude comer um Falafel e o Quico e Alice um cachorro-quente.
In the afternoon we went – once again- to Schwarz. The line was enormous and we didn’t want to spend much time in a line to get inside a store! Alice was upset and then I promised her that the next day I would take her there again and Quico could visit some other place during this time Alice and I would be in the store. Then we walked a little more through the Central Park and visited the Greenwich Village (a Bohemian neighborhood) where I had a Falafel and Quico and Alice had a hot-dog.
